After a year in Bayreuth, living near the Festspielhaus, I lived with my Mom and Dad as an Army dependent in Grafenwoehr 1955-56. I attended Nurnberg American High School and stayed at the Dorm during the week. We then moved to Leipheim and I attended Augsburg American High School until 1957 when we rotated back to the States.
I had a lot of good friends both American and German. My Dad was Civil Affairs Officer for Graf and so I met a lot of Germans he worked with. I developed a taste for German beer, Bratwurst, Sauerbraten, Rouladen, and many others.
My Mom was also very popular with the young German Officers who were training in Armor Taktik that my dad brought home for dinner. She was Italian and made a great Lasagna that was a real hit with the young men.
This was a great introduction to Europe, as we traveled extensively.

My father, Elvis H. Mattes, was stationed in Graf between 1963 - 1966 with the MP's. My Dad passed away in 1972, but what great memories our family (Mom - Shirley Mattes, Brothers - Max Mattes & Elvis Mattes) have of living in town, off post because we weren't eligible, behind Frau Kraus's china shop. Across the street was Herr Hirn's meat shop, and his son, Ludwig, became a very good friend of ours. We also had good friends, Jim & Carolyn Hix and son Kenny - Jim and Carolyn have passed away and we've lost track of Kenny. Great memories my brothers and I have of elementary school and running around town taking in the sights and experiences!

wow cool site I was stationed in Graf '88-'91 with the 535th cmb.eng. saw this site and took me back to the metrapol and the underground daze. what I could remember of them there was the green goose too Party on Graf.Any one remember A Wendy Everit she worked at the underground.

Hello Grafenwoehr, Just doing some research to pass on to my grandkids some day. My Grandparents, (Bernard Schraml and Thersa Stamm) were from Grafenwoehr, moved to the US after WWI. There's a farm somewhere in town that once belonged to his family, and might still be a farm. Anyone by chance have an address & picture? Also, I think his father may have had something to do with the town government in the early 1900s. Any info would be great! Thanks, Joseph Schraml
